Tussen Bertina en Jorge Vago staat een model van de ExoMars Rover (missie 2020)
Research kan een geweldig onderdeel van het schrijven zijn, je spreekt dan met mensen die je normaal nooit zou ontmoeten. Bertina stelde voor haar boek ‘De rode magneet’ vragen over Mars aan de Argentijn Jorge Vago, Project Scientist bij ESA’s ExoMars. Een man die dus daadwerkelijk bezig is met Marsmissies! Bertina stuurde een gesigneerd exemplaar van het boek naar hem toe, met de mededeling dat als dank zijn voornaam één keer ergens in het boek verwerkt is.
Dat Jorge Vago informatie gaf was geweldig, dat hij een bedankje stuurde voor het boek was helemaal fantastisch. Maar daar bleef het niet bij. Jorge las het boek (nota bene in het Nederlands!) en toen hij het uit had, stuurde hij ook nog eens zijn enthousiaste mening over het boek. Een grote eer! Jorge gaf toestemming om zijn reactie openbaar te plaatsen, zie hieronder (er zijn twee namen weggelaten om geen spoilers weg te geven).

I finished the book and enjoyed it immensely! I am pretty sure it has movie potential, no kidding. I was disappointed when you killed […..] after the first chapter, ha-ha.
I liked the pace you kept. There were a few details about space travel, not too many, sprinkled through the text. They demonstrated you had done good research, like the small mirror in the astronaut suit’s sleeve. During Part 1 it was clear that there was foul play, but it was not so evident who the bad person was. It was almost a pity when […..] opened his big mouth during the landing, but it was a good way to finish Part 1 and make a break for Part 2. Diana I liked a lot. She strikes a good balance between having guts and keeping her femininity — a very likeable character.
Ha, I loved the many names of Vlasi and the little explanation. Thank you. Thank you also for the kind words in the acknowledgements part. When Hollywood comes calling for the movie rights, in case you need a hand with consulting for the script, I would be happy to help 🙂
